We have two practical recommendations for how Canada should indicate strong support for energy efficiency:
- First, Canada should support the proposal for an overall and sector-specific 20% energy efficiency target at the G8 meeting. Further, we urge you to use all your influence to secure agreement amongst your G8 colleagues.
- Second, we ask that Canada reconfirm its support and financial contributions to the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP). At the two previous G8 meetings in Scotland and Russia, Canada joined other member nations in explicitly naming REEEP as a crucial way of assisting developing countries adopt energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies, and fostering international cooperation among all countries on these issues. Yet Canada has played virtually no role in REEEP aside from endorsing those statements and has not contributed financially to its program since 2005, despite numerous enquiries from REEEP partners in Canada and abroad (including some of the undersigned) and meetings with staff at the PMO, Environment Canada and Natural Resources Canada.
