Research and Analysis

Critical examination of energy issues

Credible, science-based research and analysis is the cornerstone of the Pembina Institute’s reputation. Our research, experience and expertise allow us to select the best approach and tools to explore the issues at hand. Our commitment to quality ensures we critically review our work, and seek external perspectives on our methodology and conclusions as needed to provide feedback and accountability.

We meet the need for rigorous analysis

In recent years, the capacity to effectively evaluate scientific research has been reduced in government and other sectors. The Pembina Institute’s factual research informs and supports all of our positions. We back up our analysis with solid data. As a result, our technical acumen and policy recommendations fill an important gap in Canada’s energy discourse, and players across the spectrum rely on our work.

We use a variety of approaches

Our research model

A general schematic of the Pembina Institute’s research model is shown here. A more iterative process may be used in some projects.

Our research and recommendations often provide a foundation for developing real-world solutions. The approach we take is determined by our client's needs and the project’s objectives, and developed in consultation with the client.

On a given day, you may find our staff:

  • reviewing and assessing jurisdictional approaches to regulation for government bodies looking to remodel their legislation.
  • working with granting foundations that have a commitment to environmental stewardship to model the results of different policy actions in order to see where policy change can be most effective.
  • gathering information and convening dialogues with thought leaders and key players in the energy and environment space, to build support for collaborative solutions.

Our research informs our perspectives, which we share through our publications, blogs, speakers and workshops.
