The Pembina Institute hosted an official side event, "Promoting the Developmental Benefits of the CDM — An African Case Study", at the 2005 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Montreal, Quebec. This event demonstrated how improvements to the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) process help to ensure the process achieves both reduced greenhouse gas emissions and sustainable development objectives in developing countries. The presentations highlighted lessons learned from the Pembina Institute's CDM Small Project Facility in Kenya, as well as the experiences of the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and Natuur en Milieu in promoting sustainable development through the CDM.
