Due to recent droughts, Albertans are concerned about the use of freshwater by the upstream oil and gas industry, especially for oilfieldinjection. This paper examines the effects of conventional oil and gas activities, oilsands production and coalbed methane development on water resources in Alberta. It gives statistics on water allocation and use and identifies ways to minimize both the use of fresh water and the impacts of dewatering. Recommendations to promote water conservation include better licensing and monitoring of water use, research on fresh groundwater aquifers, water basin management plans and imposing charges for industrial use of water.
