GPI Technical Report

This is one of 28 reports that provide the background for the Genuine Progress Indicators (GPI) System of Sustainable Well-being Accounts. It explains how we derived the indices that were earlier published in Sustainability Trends 2000: The Genuine Progress Statement for Alberta, 1961 to 1999. The research for this report was completed near the end of 2000.

In this report we explore employment in Alberta. In doing so, we investigate the prevalence and cost of both underemployment and unemployment in Alberta. The report answers the following questions:

  • How many members of the labour force are employed in Alberta?
  • What is the average weekly wage rate of those that are employed?
  • How many member of the labour force in Alberta are unemployed? What is the estimated cost of unemployment in Alberta?
  • How many members of the labour force in Alberta are underemployed? What is the estimated cost of underemployment in Alberta?
