The cement industry is one of the most carbon-intensive industrial processes. This is because 50 per cent of its emissions are directly linked to the chemical reaction at the centre of the process, and because the primary fuel used in the process is coal. An approach used in many jurisdictions to reduce the industry's emissions involves using fuels other than coal in the manufacturing process.
This report, co-authored by the Pembina Institute and Environmental Defence, provides a basic overview of emission mitigation opportunities in the cement industry with a particular focus on alternative fuel use in Ontario.
