Pembina reacts to Premier Clark’s promise to freeze B.C.’s carbon tax

VANCOUVER— Matt Horne, climate change program director at the Pembina Institute, made the following comments in response to Premier Christy Clark’s promise to freeze the province’s carbon tax for five years if elected:

“In promising to freeze British Columbia’s carbon tax rate for the next five years, Premier Clark is ignoring evidence that the policy is working for British Columbians. The carbon tax has contributed to a drop in the fossil fuels burned in B.C., while having negligible impacts on the economy.

“This position fails to connect the real threat that climate change poses to our communities and our economy with the need for strong climate policies. Our leaders should promise action – instead of committing to inaction.

“The carbon tax is working. If we commit to making it fairer and more effective, we commit to building a better future for B.C.”
