Pembina Reacts: American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009

Media Release

Matthew Bramley, Director of the Pembina Institute's climate change program, made the following statement in response to the draft "American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009," released today by the leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce:

"With this proposed legislation, the U.S. has taken another leap forward in addressing climate change while the Government of Canada continues to stand still.

The bill would reduce net U.S. emissions of greenhouse gases to 19 per cent below the 1990 level by 2020, using an economy-wide cap and trade system. The Harper government has a target of just 3 per cent below the 1990 level by 2020 and no legislation to meet that target.

Among many other ambitious measures, the U.S. bill proposes a ‘low-carbon transportation fuel standard.' This reinforces the message that business-as-usual levels of pollution from Alberta's oilsands cannot continue."
