Calgary — Barend Dronkers, Advisor, Clean Economy at the Pembina Institute, made the following statement in response to the Alberta Government’s funding announcement:
“Generating electricity from the sun makes sense in Alberta — it’s one of the sunniest provinces in Canada. The Solar for Schools Program will help school boards meet their electricity needs in a way that protects them from typically volatile prices in global energy markets.
“It’s not unreasonable to expect up to 20 MW of new solar power will eventually be installed through this and recently announced provincial programs such as the Alberta Indigenous Community Energy Program, doubling existing capacity. These localized systems create jobs in the community while delivering benefits to the electricity system as a whole in the form of electricity generated right when and where you need it.
“The Alberta Solar for Schools Program should make solar panels the first choice for powering Alberta schools.”
