Pembina Institute executive directors honoured among Canada’s 2012 Clean50 leaders

BANFF — Ed Whittingham, executive director of the Pembina Institute, and former executive director Marlo Raynolds (2004-2010), have been named to Canada's 2012 Clean50 list (www.clean50.ca), which recognizes 50 people whose career achievements have been influential in driving sustainable development and clean capitalism in Canada.

"Through our research, advocacy and consulting efforts, the Pembina Institute continues to shift public and private dollars from dirty energy to cleaner energy," said Whittingham, whose work with the Institute often involves bringing corporate, municipal and environmental non-government organizations together to advocate for clean energy policies.

"This approach allowed us to leverage $2 billion of federal investment in renewable energy into another $10 billion and, if current efforts are successful, will allow us to repeat that success in Alberta around electricity and in British Columbia around energy efficiency," said Whittingham.

Raynolds, who began work with the Institute in 1995 and led the organization for seven years, focused his work on improving oilsands development, advancing climate change policies, advocating for renewable energy and energy efficiency, and improving transportation systems in Canada.

"I'm very proud of the growing influence that the Pembina Institute has had on the Canadian energy debate in recent years," said Raynolds. "We helped to drive landmark provincial policies like B.C.'s carbon tax, Ontario's Green Energy Act and municipal polices that have resulted in millions of dollars invested in community clean energy projects."

The Clean50, developed by Delta Management, includes 16 categories of sectors, recognizing at least two people in each, based primarily on their impact on sustainable development within the last two years.
