Vancouver — JESSICA MCILROY, manager, Buildings program at the Pembina Institute, made the following statement in response to the release of B.C. ministerial mandate letters:
"It’s encouraging to see the new mandate letters emphasize the connection between sustainable economic growth and prosperity, our health and the foundational need to address climate change. With a rapidly growing new energy economy and the increased urgency of the climate crisis, this new government has a critical opportunity to make climate action the focus of its economic strategy. Ensuring B.C. has an abundant supply of zero-emission electricity to power homes, businesses, and vehicles is a significant economic opportunity. Aligning energy policy with CleanBC targets is essential for long-term success and requires coordination across the B.C. Utilities Commission, B.C. Hydro, and other key agencies.
"We’re pleased to see the commitment to working with the BC Green Caucus to review CleanBC in 2025, ensuring that the targets, objectives and actions are aligned with the urgent need for climate action and other needs of British Columbians. We’re also encouraged to see the directive to work with the federal government to cap emissions from the oil and gas sector while attracting investment for clean technologies.
"As the pace of investment in the new energy economy intensifies, B.C. can’t delay in delivering a cohesive energy plan that integrates the climate and economic policies essential to the province's future wellbeing. We look forward to collaborating with the government to ensure that the province not only meets its climate goals, but also capitalizes on the vast economic opportunities on offer."
