Emerging market potential exemplified by Deep Sky and Low Carbon announcement

Investment and jobs to follow in provinces that enable the carbon removal-clean energy partnership

CALGARY JORDEN DYE, director of the Pembina Institute’s Carbon Dioxide Removal Centre (CDR Centre) and the Business Renewables Centre-Canada (BRC-Canada), made the following statement in response to a new power purchase agreement announced by Low Carbon and Deep Sky.

“We see the announcement of a power purchase agreement by Deep Sky and Low Carbon as the start of a strong partnership of industries in Canada. This is a synergy that promises to draw more investment and create jobs in jurisdictions that foster this relationship.

“Carbon removal and clean energy are hand-in-glove industries whose partnership makes intrinsic sense. Carbon removal companies exist to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and they need to generate as little carbon as possible in the removal process for the carbon accounting to work. Using wind and solar energy to power their operations is quite simply part of their business model.

“The Business Renewables Centre-Canada had an influx of carbon removal companies inquire and join the community last year. Deep Sky is one of those companies. Obviously, there’s considerable potential there.

“This partnership will flourish in jurisdictions that work out how to accommodate both industries. This means setting up a strong regulatory framework to allow for carbon storage once it’s captured. It also means enabling the build out of more clean energy in welcoming communities.”

Jorden Dye, director of the CDR Centre and the Business Renewables Centre-Canada, is available for comment.

Quick facts

  • Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is the name given to a group of methods that can be used to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, after which it can be stored away for a long period of time. The purpose of CDR is to lower the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to reduce its warming impact and slow down climate change.

  • CDR is not a replacement for the critical work of reducing carbon emissions. It should be complementary to emissions reductions.

Background

The Carbon Dioxide Removal Centre (CDR Centre) is an initiative of the Pembina Institute. The CDR Centre aims to build CDR awareness for decision-makers, spur CDR market activity in Canada and encourage public procurement of CDR credits.

The Business Renewables Centre-Canada (BRC-Canada) is also an initiative of the Pembina Institute and it exists to enable businesses and institutions to access renewable energy for their emissions reduction needs across Canada. This means working closely with buyers and developers of renewables and assisting them in shortening their learning curves as they figure out the best path to power purchase agreements.
