Vancouver, BC — JESSICA MCILROY, Manager, Buildings program at the Pembina Institute, made the following statement in response to B.C.’s speech from the throne.
In today's speech, B.C. reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening and protecting the economy by further developing its resource and energy sectors.
"Accelerating clean energy and electrification projects is essential for B.C. to build a competitive, low-carbon economy. Prioritizing renewables and critical minerals will strengthen energy security, create long-term jobs, and reduce emissions—while continuing to position B.C. as a leader in the new clean energy economy.
"B.C. has an opportunity to lead in both clean energy and responsible resource development. If LNG projects move forward, they must align with strong emissions caps and decarbonization throughout the oil and gas value chain while keeping Indigenous rights front and centre throughout the process. A clean economy isn’t just about what we build—it’s about how we build it.
"B.C.’s decision to fast-track 18 resource projects is an opportunity to build long-term energy security. There is a need, however, to balance ambition and responsibility, ensuring that we think through the long-term impacts of any project, and that the recognition of Indigenous rights is critical to any effective development process. A measured approach will help ensure all impacted communities are around the table and heard.
“With the right policies, B.C. can maximize its resource potential while maintaining its climate and reconciliation commitments. The growth of renewable energy in B.C. is critical to supporting electrification efforts in the province. Strategic investment in energy will boost our economy, enhance trade opportunities, and ensure prosperity for communities across the province.”
