Shale Gas Thought Leader Forum

Environmental issues and opportunities

On September 19 and 20, 2012, the Pembina Institute and sponsoring partners hosted a national Shale Gas Thought Leader Forum at The University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B.C.

Shale Gas Thought Leader Forum ProceedingsThe Pembina Institute Shale Gas Thought Leader Forum brought together key decision-makers and experts on shale gas from public and private sectors, First Nations, community groups, environmental non-government organizations (ENGOs) and academics to discuss and debate critical shale gas development issues, informed by a discussion paper that summarizes the current state of knowledge.

Forum Topics

  1. Environmental concerns: What are the issues of greatest concern to stakeholders? What is the current state of knowledge on these concerns? What is needed to resolve gaps in understanding or awareness?
  2. Beyond compliance practices by industry: What are the range of activities being undertaken on a voluntary basis by companies to demonstrate leadership in resolving environmental concerns and earning social license from host communities? What are stakeholder expectations for industry action? Where are gaps and how might these be filled?
  3. Policy framework and enforcement: What principles should guide the development and enforcement of regulation to ensure shale gas development is undertaken responsibly?
