B.C. Shale Scenario ToolModel and technical report

Publication - June 18, 2015 - By Maximilian Kniewasser, Matt Horne

There are currently 19 proposals for liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals along B.C.’s coast. While most of these projects are unlikely to be developed, if even a few proceed, the LNG terminals will create considerable pressure to increase the development of B.C.’s shale gas resources in the northeast. The environmental impacts of such development could be significant and the magnitude of those impacts have not been thoroughly explored or addressed.

The Pembina Institute with modelling support from Navius Research developed this scenario-planning tool to better understand these environmental impacts. It is available below for downland.

In particular, the tool allows users to explore the potential implications of:

  • Different levels of LNG and shale gas development
  • Different source basins for the gas (e.g. Montney or Horn River)
  • Different technologies and practices designed to limit environmental impacts (e.g. reducing methane leaks or recycling wastewater).

We anticipate updating and adding functionality to the tool over time. If you would like to be emailed an updated version at a later date, please contact Maximilian Kniewasser

The following video instruction manual provides an overview of how to use the B.C. Shale Scenario Tool.
